In this post, I will talk about the time we spent in Osaka, Universal Studios, Kyoto, and Nara.

I didn’t want to put all of Japan into one post as we were there for 16 days and did so much here.

  • Today didn’t really start today. It started yesterday as we had to be at the airport overnight for a flight at 07:00 and the earliest train would get us here around 45 minutes before the flight left. It definitely wasn’t enough time to get from the station to the terminal and then through check-in and security and to the gate. We also didn’t want to pay for an Uber as they are ridiculously expensive here in Japan. The distance from the hotel to the airport was around 55 miles. The Uber would have cost around £182 – yep, you read that right. One hundred and eighty-two of ole sausage fingers pounds! A taxi wasn’t much cheaper. They are bookable by the hour with booking fees added on. It’s just not a viable way to get around.

We couldn’t really do much in the airport until check-in had opened. We walked around. Then walked around a little more. I saw an unattended suitcase there and told someone and they just carried on with their work. I guess it wasn’t that much of a threat to them.

We went to the 24-hour convenience store at the airport to get some bits and pieces. Ken picked up what he thought was bread and butter (to be fair, the packaging had pictures of bread on it). It turns out it was just butter. He found something else to eat and then we went to get the back checked in and then head to security to go to the boarding gate. This seemed like a hundred miles away too.

When we were going through security, some chap followed me through the scanner and it went off and he was confused. I just kept going my merry way towards the boarding gate.

Ken and I got to the gate and this chap came and stood next to us and started to talk to us and tell us we should visit Indonesia and some of the prices of food and the like. He asked our ages and I asked him to guess mine and he said 35. Before that though, he asked Ken if he was my dad, I found it way funnier than Ken did though. Ken said he had to go to the toilet and just left me to deal with the guy. Cheers, FRIEND! After about another 10 minutes I just got up and said I needed to stretch my legs – not a lie as I did. I was sick of sitting down. I went and found some water and then found the traitor and sat with him until our flight was called.

We got on the plane first then got our seats and hoped that nobody was sitting in the row with us. The flight was chocka and we were one of only a couple of rows with a seat free. Result for us.

The flight wasn’t good. It was ok taking off and cruising. Just before we started our initial descent, the pilot came on the tannoy and said that we would experience light turbulence. Light my ass. It was awful. It was like we were flying right through a storm. Just horrible. Bumpy. Rocking. Crappy weather.

We touched down and noticed how bad the rain was. It was chucking it down. That put pay to our plans to go to Nara once we got to the hotel. As we were taxiing to the gate I checked the weather on the days of our original plans for here in Osaka (Universal Studios/Kyoto/Nara) and the days were showing as being sunny. We decided we would stick to the original plan and just go to the hotel to see if we could check in early.

We made our way to the train and just got on the first one that was stopping where we needed to get off. I slept for most of this train journey as I was super tired. Since getting up yesterday morning I had about 2 hours of sleep.

We waited for the connecting train and I was happy to see several trains just pass by the station. I decided to see if I could get some good shots of the trains. I think I did well with the video below. It captures the train leaving but also captures the falling rain. Good job I went to those highly sought-after (ha, yeah right) Today@Apple courses about photography and videography.

We got to the station we needed for the hotel and seemed to get lost trying to find our exit. Ken went and had a look and found it and we headed that way to the hotel. Thankfully the hotel was about 30 seconds from the station exit. We asked if we could check in early and they said no. We went for a wander and we are now just sitting in the hotel waiting for the room to be sorted for us. We’ve been here about an hour already. Only 2 more to go. Yay for us.

I went and asked about 14:40 if we could check in and they still said no. They wouldn’t even give us 20 minutes free as they said the room was still being cleaned. After a few minutes, they came out and said we could check in early. I wonder who managed to clean the room in such a short space of time. The biggest con is that hotels need 4-5 hours to clean the room.

We got to the room and dropped our stuff off but didn’t stay too long. Neither of us wanted to sleep for too long as we needed to sleep tonight ready for an early start tomorrow. We went and got the train to a place called Namba. We saw there was a Starbucks there so that’s why we ended up there. It was quite a busy place. A big station, several office blocks, several shopping malls, lots of neon, a big market.

We walked a little through the market and I found the obligatory souvenirs and purchased said souvenirs. We walked a little further down and I told Ken if he wanted to carry on that it was fine and I would just walk back the way we came. Markets and people are not my thing at all and I didn’t want to be around them all. He carried on walking and I went first to Bic Camera to record their jingle. It’s funny and I’ve sung it a couple of times around Ken to make sure it gets stuck inside his head. I then went inside a shop and had a look around. The top floor was all about Ramen.

I then went back down and met Ken and we went to Starbucks. This one was packed as it was so small. We managed to find a seat and stayed there for about half an hour before deciding to head out and go look for some food. Ken found some Gyoza’s and then we went to look for a 7-Eleven so I could get some food. We found one and they had no egg sandwiches left. By this point, I was getting really irritated. I wanted food, I wanted some sleep, I wanted away from people. We found a Family Mart and I got my sandwiches from there and then we decided to head for the train to come back to the hotel.

I left Ken and then I went out for a walk and had a walk to the tram line and waited for the trams so I could get some pictures and videos. I managed to get one of each in either direction and then I headed back to the hotel as I needed some sleep as we had an early start for the queues and people and theme park tomorrow.
