So… this was a really impromptu trip. I booked it on Tuesday when I was on my way back to Marrakech from Essaouira and I was going to leave on the Sunday but I couldn’t get to Heathrow because of rail works closing the line between Peterborough and London.
I looked on the Saturday and decided to leave the instead. I booked the hostel to check in on the Saturday so that when I got here on Sunday I could go straight to the room because I landed around 04:45.
I got up at 03:00 on the Saturday morning and showered and got ready and just headed to the train station. The train to London was at 04:19. Thankfully no delays.
I got the tube to Heathrow and I was leaving from T4. I have never used this terminal before and I never want to again. It seems stuck in time.
I checked FR24 and the flight was showing as late arriving into London. They put this down to the closure of airspace in the Middle East adding extra time. Usually, they would fly over Iraq/Iran but had to re-route over Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
We were supposed to leave at 10:00 but didn’t board until 11:00. We ended up taking off around 11:30.
The plane was sweltering and people weren’t happy. I got an aisle seat and that was perfect for me. A guy came up to the row I was in and said I could move to the middle if I wanted and I told him there was no way I was sitting in the middle. He didn’t seem overly happy at this. Oh well. Pay for the seat you want if you don’t want random allocation.
Once the engines started, the air started to cool down. I was so happy for that.
It was a fairly uneventful flight, too – well, unless you count the stupid kids behind bashing my seat. I asked the cabin crew what time we were expecting to land in Bahrain and if it would be enough time for the transfer. The transfer originally was 3.5 hours, but ended up being about 35 minutes.
I had to rush off the plane and then rush to the transfer area. Thankfully security wasn’t busy and I was able to get through fairly quick. They even allowed me to keep my drinks with me. I was so happy at that.
I got to the gate and on the plane with 15 minutes to spare. Phew.
I found my seat and it was a bulkhead seat. I got good plane karma. Boarding was complete and the middle seat was free – until some woman from the back complained and was brought forward to sit in it. I was so annoyed. I got up as many times as I could just to make it uncomfortable for her.
I got to Bangalore and went to immigration and some guy tried to cut in front of me and I reminded him there was a queue and made him get behind me. I was way too tired to be dealing with that. The border guard asked for the visa and I told him to look at the page in the passport that had it from when I was here in October last year. You can read about that trip here.
I got the stamp and headed out of the airport. Some guy from a bureau de change asked if I wanted to change money and he said I could use my card. I asked him how many Rupees £200 would get me and he said 20k. I told him not to bother as I would get a better rate at an ATM and he said I wouldn’t. I knew I would and I did. I got 20k Rupees for £160. You’ve got to be up early to catch me out on this stuff!
I went and waited outside and just took in the sights and sounds of the airport here. It was way better than Delhi airport. It was less noisy and less busy.
I had the transfer booked for 06:30 and got to the hostel around 07:00 and checked in and went to the room and showered and slept. It was so nice to be able to sleep after being awake for so long.

I got up and went for a wander around the area of the hostel. I was looking for somewhere to eat and found a pasta place on the map. I ended up walking in the wrong direction and had to backtrack a little. It was ok, though, as it gave me a chance to see more around the hostel.
I had to take my life into my hands to cross a road. I had to weave in and out of cars, buses, motorbikes, tuktuks. It’s all part of the adventure though. I loved it.
I got some pictures and videos of the traffic.
Once I realised I was heading in the wrong direction, I turned around and headed towards the place I wanted to eat. It’s called Pasta Street.
On the way, I found a couple of parks I want to check out when I am here too.
I got to the place and was happy to get some food. Time will tell if it was a good idea or not. I got garlic bread and chicken carbonara.
I finished here and decided to head back to the hostel as it was starting to rain and I didn’t really want to be out walking in the rain.
I passed a temple that I will go back to at some point, too. I asked the hostel about tours to Mysore and what to see here in Bangalore. They gave some suggestions, but I didn’t really understand what he was saying
I am going to chill for the evening because I am still tired and want to get some good sleep. The best thing about this hostel is that I am in a private room and the AC works, and it’s delicious.
Before I went to sleep, I messaged the guy from the hostel about train tickets to Mysore on Thursday and I also booked some flights to go to Chennai for the day tomorrow. It’s going to be a long day. I leave at 05:00 and get back to Bangalore at 01:00 and about 01:30 to the hostel. RIP my sleep for the next couple of days.
I also booked a day tour around Bangalore on Wednesday. I found a way to keep myself occupied for the time I’m here.

I went and met the driver and headed to the airport. The traffic was so bad. As we were getting closer to the airport, the rain started to be heavy. I was so glad it waited until I was almost at the airport for it to rain.
I got to the airport and dropped off my bag. I stood in the queue for ages despite an agent being available. They were there for when the “important” passengers checked in. There was 1 the whole time I was in the queue.
I left my bag and decided just to head straight for security so I could find something to eat and drink and charge my oharge my phone. There isn’t a huge selection in this airport. It was weird.
I found a Relay and just got some Fanta and Sprite and then headed to the gate. I didn’t have to wait long before boarding. I was in zone 1 so I was one of the first on the plane. The flight was a bit bumpy crossing the Indian Ocean. I wasn’t a fan. The food wasn’t too bad. Though it looked like someone had thrown up in the tray, it tasted quite good.
We landed in Bahrain and I tried to get off the plane quick but I was thwarted. I went to security to go back through to get to the gate I needed. I went and got something to eat and drink from the WHSmith here. It was way cheaper than at home. 3 bottles of fizzy and a Galaxy bar for about £3. That would easily be double that back home.
I went to the gate and saw that they had metal detectors and x-rays. I was concerned that I’d have my drinks taken away from me. Thankfully they didn’t. They were doing spot checks though. I wasn’t selected – for a change.
I boarded and we left pretty much on time. The flight was a little turbulent at times. Thankfully, it wasn’t too bad.
The flight felt a little cramped though and I wasn’t a fan. I think I managed about 2 hours of sleep on the flight. I was woken up by the flight attendant at meal time and I was so confused as to where I was. The choice was an omelette or pancakes. I opted for pancakes. You can see in the picture below that these aren’t pancakes. They were more like cinnamon rolls and they were delicious!
We finally got to London and I was so happy to be off the plane and on solid ground and not cramped. Gulf Air is a decent airline and they have decent leg room on their planes – but the seat width isn’t the best.
I crossed the border and went for my luggage. Of course, it was one of the last bags to come through. Typical.
I headed for the tube and got to the station and the woman at the barriers let me through. I was supposed to get LNER at about 10:40. I ended up getting the 09:16 Thameslink home. I got home around the same time as the LNER train was leaving London. I needed that extra hour to unpack and do laundry, as I am on shift tonight.
Bangalore/Chennai/Mysore was a really good trip and places I can recommend going to!
