I have wanted to come to Marrakesh for a good few years now.

I tried to get here in 202 but the pandemic put pay to that. I tried again in 2021, but the pandemic still had other ideas for me.

I had almost given up on coming to Morocco, but I found some flights for Fez and decided to go there instead. You can read about that trip here.

Fast forward nearly 5 years and I finally found some time that I could come to Marrakesh. I booked my flights and hostel and just waited for the time to pass. I had about 6 weeks until I was due to fly out.

Yesterday, I got an email from the hostel to say they had to close because of a bed bug infestation and I had resigned myself to the fact that I probably wouldn’t be coming to Marrakesh because of it. I didn’t want to find another hostel and go through the hassle of reading reviews and stuff.

I was with Ken, and we were doing some computer stuff and as I was looking at the map and a hostel jumped out at me. I messaged them about an airport transfer and also about a lower bunk. I ended up calling them, and they said they could do the transfer and a lower bunk. Best of all: this last minute it was still cheaper than the other hostel I had booked.

I left for the airport and I got there with a little over 90 minutes. The queues for security were quite long.

I went and got my meal deals and found somewhere to sit so I could charge my phone.

I got a notification of the gate and just went there so I could sit and charge my phone some more and just wait for the flight to board.

As we were boarding, I could see one of the gate agents bag checking and I thought I might not be in luck because they were checking backpacks too.

Luckily mine wasn’t checked and I was allowed through. I was towards the end of the queue which meant no waiting in the stuffy stairwell.

We boarded and I was happy for the aisle seat.

The flight was really smooth and I just watched some stuff on my phone and relaxed. It was probably one of the best flights I’ve had with Ryanair.

We landed and some woman got huffy with me because I bumped into her when she pushed me out of the way so she could leave the plane. I told her she was stupid and needed to be mindful of those around her.

I went to passport control and it was really quick to get through. I was asked where I had come from and where I was staying and they stamped my passport and let me through.

I had to show some guards the stamp on the passport so they would let me through into baggage claim. I then had to put my bags through an X-ray to get into the arrivals hall.

I messaged the driver and told him I was in the arrivals hall and heading out. Thankfully, I wasn’t accosted by taxi touts. I found the driver and we went to the hostel. It was a nice drive (minus no AC). I was met on the corner by a guy from the hostel.

I checked into the hostel and then went and got something to eat and drink. I came back to the hostel so I could relax for the night. I booked a day tour Essaouira for tomorrow. I might as well see as much as I can when I am here.

I think I’ll book a walking tour for Thursday so I can get some insight into Marrakesh (and hopefully find souvenirs).

Essaouira

Marrakech

  • Today was an early start for the tour to Essaouira. I ended up waking up about 6 and then decided just to get up and go for a shower.

The showers at this hostel are awful. They only have the rainfall type and they are very weak. There was a minimal amount of hot water too so I ended up having a cold shower and I don’t feel like I showered properly.

I came back down and sat on the bed for about 20 minutes and then went out for a walk to see if a shop was open so I could get a cold drink. No shops were open that early.

As I was walking around I got accosted by a local trying to direct me to places and I just turned around and told him I was fine and knew where I was going. He was after money but I didn’t have any.

I got back to the hostel and picked up my bag and a driver was waiting for me.

I got some water and left my payment on the desk and then went with Speedy Gonzales to the minibus.

We got to the minibus and I thought this was the start of the tour. It turns out I was very wrong. This was just a shuttle around the city collecting people to take them to a central point.

I ended up waiting about 2o minutes at the central point for the minibus to Essaouira. We were the last to be picked up so it was full and I had to have a crappy seat right at the back.

We set off on our way and what a long drive it was. The roads here are atrocious and everything averages about 35mph. It took about 3 hours to get there.

We stopped for about 20 minutes at a cafe. It was the most expensive cafe I have been to. I got a magnet, a bag of crisps, a drink, a KitKat and it came to a tenner. They overinflate the prices for sure.

We left here and then headed to Essaouira. There really wasn’t much to see on the way.

Well, I say not much. We went to a place that made Argan Oil and were given a tour. I opted out of it and just sat down. I hate this kind of stuff. Just take me to where the tour is going and not all this added crap.

We left here and we got a point where there was a lookout over the city and it was rammed. It didn’t matter though as the driver didn’t stop for us to get some pictures. I got a quick pic from the minibus but you can’t see it properly.

We got dropped off in Essouira and were told we had 4 hours here and then we had to meet the minibus again.

I was so glad to be off it and just go wandering on my own. I went into the Medina and just walked around and let my feet do the directing.

I liked being here because it was right on the Atlantic. The breeze was very welcome. I took advantage of it and stayed as close to the water as possible.

I was enjoying walking around and enjoying the breeze. They had a lot of fresh fish here, too.

I walked to where the fortress was in the picture above but they wanted an entrance fee so I turned around and went back into the Medina and just walked around more.

I went to what looked like another fortress and it was nice to look out across the sea. I also found a wall to stand on – mind you, I had to wait around for a while for someone to move so I could get pictures there.

I loved the views out across the Atlantic and I loved the sounds of the waves crashing. I would have stayed here a little longer but a couple of people decided to climb on the bit I was on and I didn’t feel safe. I turned round to leave and the guy just stood there. I had to shoot him a look so he would move.

I left here and went back into the Medina and walked around some more. I found magnets here and got them and then carried on walking.

I found a wall where I could sit and have something to eat and drink and enjoy the cool breeze from the sea. It was so nice. By the time I was done here it was nearly time to go back towards the meeting point.

I took a slow walk in that direction. I was proud of myself for not using a map and still being able to find my way out of the Medina.

I sat and had some more food and drink and then went to wash my hands. I asked how much it was to use the bathroom and he said to pay what I thought – at least that’s what I thought he said in broken English. I paid 2 MAD.

I headed back out of the Medina and walked the long way round to the meeting point. It was a nice walk and all aided in getting my step count up.

The minibus finally turned up and we got in and headed for Marrakech. The AC wasn’t working so we just had the warm air flow from the window being open. It was stifling and the seats was super uncomfortable.

It took us nearly 3.5 hours to get back to Marrakech.

I was so glad to be off the thing. I managed to navigate the Medina here and find the hostel. I was so glad to walk in and put my stuff on the bed.

Today has been a good day though and I am glad I went. I was so grateful for the breeze when walking around. If I came back to Morocco I don’t think I would go back to Essaouira though. It was nice for a day visit but that’s about it.

Below are some pics from today

Last night I asked the hostel to arrange a transfer for me to the airport. I didn’t want the hassle of going to the bus stop and using the bus. I was too tired. I asked for it to be there at 09:00.

I got up and showered and got ready and packed the last few bits. The taxi turned up at 08:45. I had to go back to the hostel though as I forgot my cap and I don’t want to lose another one.

The driver was driving crazily to the airport. He was going so fast. I got there in record time. It was 13 minutes in all. Madness, considering it took about 25 minutes to get from the airport.

I got to the airport and saw a sign that said I needed to have my boarding card validated before I went to security. I went and queued up and it was moving really slow. Fun times. A couple behind me decided to leave the queue and head to security and then came back and took their original spot in the queue. It’s a good job they weren’t in front of me otherwise I would have told them to get lost and go to the back.

They were moaning when the assistance passengers were going ahead of us. I told them they needed to calm down and relax. I’m not sure they liked that.

I got my boarding pass validated and went to security. On the way there, I saw a sign that said if you buy in duty-free you have to pay in a foreign currency, but in every other shop you can use Dirhams to pay. Very weird.

Security was pretty quick and then passport control was done too.

I went and got some food and saw that there was a delay with the flight. The plane that was supposed to be used had a technical issue so they had to swap it out and this caused the delay.

We boarded after 2.5 hours and, thankully, the flight wasn’t full. I asked if I could sit in the row in front of me and the stewardess said yes. I got a row to myself. It’s like winning the Ryanair lottery!

We started the climb and it was bumpy for most of the climb. I didn’t like it – especially with the news coming out of India. Once that seatbelt sign was off, I lay down for about 30 minutes and got some sleep. It was needed.

The rest of the flight was uneventful. I was glad to be back in Stansted though. I got across the border pretty quick and it gave me enough time to get something to eat and head to the platform.

I got to the platform and they were holding people because of train delays. I found a worker and asked if CrossCountry was affected and he said no and I asked if he would let me through. He did and then he decided to call for others wanting the same train. Some joined up thinking is needed in these situations.

Marrakech and Essaouira were good places to visit and I am glad I went.
