I have wanted to go to Taiwan for a while but have never found a price on flights that I was willing to pay.

I finally found them and decided I would book. I booked for the week over my birthday since I have been in Asia over that time for the last few years.

I decided that I would spend a few days in Taipei, then a few days in Manila and then back to Taipei for a day before going back home.

I told Ken and he said he wanted to come along too. I told him the itinerary and he was hesitant to start with, but then decided he would book onto the same flights and come along.

As it was getting closer he was saying that he didn’t think going to Maila was a good idea because it was so much travelling in such a short space of time. I got where he was coming from. It was probably better that we didn’t go because of all of the travel in a short space of time.

We ended up not going to Manila and decided we would book some tours in Taipei for the days we should have been in Manila.

We got some tours booked and then ordered our currency and eSIMs for the trip and then just waited for the day to arrive that we would leave.

  • The day came for us to head to the airport. We had our parking booked at Gatwick (and it was welcome over taking the train and it was less than half the price of one return ticket too) so we could just turn up and then head into the terminal.

We left Peterborough about 05:00 and then headed to the airport. It was a nice drive down – though as soon as we got close to the Dartford Crossing I needed the toilet bad so we had to stop there and then battle the traffic on the way out.

We got to Gatwick and left the car and then headed to the terminal and to the check-in desks. For some reason, online check-in with Air China doesn’t work so it has to be done at the desks.

The agent asked for our PNR and I gave him the only one I had and he was adamant there should be another one. He found it for both of us and then checked us in. He said that the only free seats were middle seats. Ken wanted to be on the aisle on the same row I was on. The guy was so unhelpful.

We got through security without any issues and then we headed to the departure lounge. I left Ken to do his duty-free looking and I just went to get some food from WHSmith and then find some seats to sit and relax before the gate was announced.

We finally got on the plane and it was probably only half full. There were more than just middle seats free. I asked one of the cabin crew if the aisle seat on my row was free. She said it was and then Ken came and sat on the same row.

The flight was just under 11 hours. It was a fairly straight forward flight. We landed in Shanghai and had to go to the transfer desk and we were stuck there for about 30 minutes waiting. We had to go through security again and then we headed to the departure lounge to wait. We had about 5 hours here.

We went to find something to eat and drink. There wasn’t a lot of choice sadly. However, this was way better than Beijing airport. I went to a shop to get some stuff but they wouldn’t accept my Monzo card. It annoyed me as I had to go back to a shop that did accept it but that had more expensive stuff.

We boarded and I was on a row that had 2 seats. The guy sitting next to me was just nasty. Constantly sniffing and coughing and moving himself into my space. I was so glad when there was a seat free on a different row and he moved. I got to have the row to myself and nobody encroaching on my space and coughing my way.

We landed in Taipei and headed straight for immigration and then the baggage carousel. We just wanted to be away from the airport and onto the metro to the hotel. We were thinking about a transfer but it was like £45 for a transfer as opposed to £3 on the metro.

We got to Sanchong station and could see the hotel from there. It made me feel better that we were close to public transport.

We followed the directions on the map and it had us go out of the station and then down a ramp and along the road. It turns out we could have turened right and then headed down to the lift and then out the station that way. Oh well, it’s all part of the travel adventure.

We checked in at the hotel and went to the room. It was a really nice room and it had a balcony. The shower was nice and the toilet was decent too. It was a toilet that washed and dried you. I love those toilets.

We unpacked a little and rested and then decided to head out to the 7-Eleven that was around the corner and got some food and drinks and then went on the metro to the main station area and walked around there.

We wanted to get our bearings and just see what was around.

We were out for a couple of hours and then decided to head back to the hotel as we had to be up early in the morning so we could go to the Taipei 101 before going on the tour we had booked.

Below are some pics from today

Today was the day I was dreading. Not because it was time to go home, but because of how long the layover was going to be in Shanghai.

We decided to lie in as long as possible, check out dead on time and then head to the airport.

We did exactly that. I got up about 10:15 and then showered and then finished up the packing and then we checked out and went to get the metro to the airport.

We got to the airport and it seemed to be a long way up to the departure hall. I said we should get to the check-in desks and check in so we could get some good seats and then do the tax return after that.

We waited about 20 minutes before the check-in desks opened. We got to the agent and requested an aisle and window seat on both flights. He said he had done that for us.

We then went downstairs and I did the tax return. It was so easy. I just had to scan my passport and then the QR code on the receipt. I then opted for the tax back to be done on my card. It didn’t make sense to get it in cash as I had enough anyway.

Ken saw an exchange bureau and we both changed some dollars back to pounds. I got about £30 for the amount I exchanged.

Once we were done here we just went to security and then passport control and then to the gate. We had about 2 hours before our flight departed. I like to just go to the gate and sit. Ken likes to look in duty free and wander. I was happy to let him do that and I headed to the gate.

We decided to get something to drink and to eat before we had to board. We weren’t sure what we would get on the flight. It’s a good job we did. There were only drinks on the flight.

We boarded and then just sat back for the flight. I’m not sure if I slept on this leg. I think I did but i’m not entirely sure.

We landed in Shanghai and I was desperate for the toilet. I found one and then tried my best to find Ken afterwards. It turns out he went to where the transfer desk is. I met him there and we went through the transfer process.

I told Ken we would have to go through security again and would need to abandon our drinks. We were both annoyed at this since they were bought in an airport. Oh well, got to play by the rules I guess.

We had to take our money, our cables, our powerbanks, our liquids, our electronics out of the bag. The woman behind me in the queue was pushing me to go faster but I couldn’t because of the person in front of me. I told her such too and she wasn’t happy.

We got through and then just went to the gate areas and sat. Ken went off to find some coffee. I sat waiting for him and he came back and we just sat and charged our phones and chilled. We had about 9.5 hours here before our flight was due to leave.

I looked at our boarding passes and realised that the check-in agent in Taipei had given us aisle and middle seats instead of aisle and window. I was getting agitated as I didn’t want to have to sit in the middle seat for over 12 hours. I saw that Air China had a VIP lounge near where we were sitting so I went to them to see if they could help. They put me in an aisle seat in the last 5 rows of the plane. I was ok with that. It meant I had easy access to the toilets which was good since I wasn’t feeling 100%.

At least the middle seat was free.

The flight was 12 hours and 24 minutes. I slept for about 2 hours of it. I was trying to sleep as long as possible as I was working the night shift. It turns out 2 hours was all I could manage.

We landed in Gatwick and then went to the baggage carousel and seemed to be there for ages before the bags began to come through. I checked Find My and saw that my bag was at least at Gatwick. I got it and noticed they had cracked the bag but there was nobody about to get help from.

We just headed out to the car and set on our way. It felt so good to be off the plane and on the way home. I was desperate to be home so I could have a shower. I felt yucky.

I got home and showered and chilled. I tried to sleep before work but only got about 20 minutes. Work tonight will be fun.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Taipei. I want to go back to Taiwan and see the west of the island.
