This post, and the two that follow, will talk about our trip to India, Nepal & Vietnam.

This trip was a long time coming and it seemed to take a while to come around after we booked it. I think we had about 6 months between booking it and when we were due to leave.

We ended up staying overnight in London near Heathrow as it would have meant the first train (03:30) of the day from Peterborough with very little room for issues on the train. It was definitely a better choice.

One of Ken’s daughters took us to Heathrow. It was nice to not have to take public transport.

We got to Delhi and our transfer from the airport to the hotel never turned up. That should have been a cue for us as to how the hotel would be.

After 90 minutes of waiting in the heat, we decided to get an Uber to the hotel. When we got there we asked what happened to the transfer and they said they forgot to book it. Charming. They insisted we pay there and then – another cue as to what it would be like.

They showed us to the room and it stunk. It was dirty. The toilet didn’t flush. The bedclothes were dirty. There were dead flies all over the floor. The only good thing this room had was a working AC unit.

We had to ask them for a change of room the next day (though we did travel out of the city for a couple of days).

This hotel has to be the worst we have every stayed in. It is definitely worse than any hostels I have stayed in too and that’s saying something!

  • Today was the first full day we had here. We didn’t sleep very well as we got in around 02:30 (thanks for not scheduling the transfer you confirmed).

We did our usual morning routine of showering and getting ready and then we headed out about 10:00.

We spoke to reception about the room, how awful it is and how the toilet doesn’t flush. They didn’t really seem to know what we were saying. It was a fruitless task trying to explain it. We tried to get another room from them that had a flushable toilet but were unsuccessful in that too.

We decided we would just head out and then see what we could find. On our way out of the hotel, one of the workers told us to be careful with our money and our belongings because “white faces” make us a target.

We headed out and almost instantly we (I say we, I was busy walking slow and taking pictures) were accosted by someone being ‘helpful’. We got a little further on (to a way I wanted to go but couldn’t because I was being slow with my picture/video taking. By the time I looked up to see where Ken was he had been accosted by someone else and was already making his way up and over the bridge.

I quickly caught up and slowed down again to take some pictures of the train station. I wanted to see if it was really as they show in the pictures. I couldn’t tell because it was right at the end of the platforms. Ken was still walking with his new friend.

We got over the bridge and to the lights and I had seen they had both stopped and were talking to someone in a TukTuk. I caught up and Ken was saying that his new friend was on his way to a festival and I thought that’s where we were going too.

I thoroughly enjoyed the ride in the TukTuk, but we ended up at some bazaar or other. I don’t even know why we ended up there. The driver – Sunny – waited for us and then drove us around and he told us of a company near Connaught Place that did a tourist taxi for the day.

We went there and priced up a day trip to see the city. It was ₹3,000 for both of us. I’m pretty sure our “white faces” got us an inflated price. As he was telling us about this trip, he started to ask us about our itinerary for the rest of the time on this trip and we told him and he started to put a plan together. He told us about going to Agra but we already had this planned with another company. He said we should cancel and that he would put together a better trip and do us a good deal. The itinerary he put together was as follows:

    • Day taxi for Delhi
    • Transfer to Agra with an overnight stay in a CLEAN hotel
    • Day trip to the Taj Mahal and its surroundings
    • Transfer to Jaipur with an overnight stay in a CLEAN hotel
    • Day trip around Jaipur
    • Transfer back to Delhi
    • Airport transfer the next morning for our flight to Kathmandu

The total cost for the extra days was an additional ₹27,000

We told him we would think about it and then headed to Starbucks (dropped off by Sunny).

Sunny went on his way and as we were in Starbucks I looked for places to buy souvenirs. We left Starbucks and I was heading in the direction the map said for the souvenir store but couldn’t find it. As we were walking, Sunny came by again and said he would take us to some place to get souvenirs.

He took us to the tourist place first and we decided we would book the tour since the one with the other company had free cancellation. As we walked in the door I asked if they knew where I could get some Fanta and they went and found some for me. I drank the bottle (250ml) in no time and I think it shocked them. I was super thirsty.

Things got a little heated in there though because he told us the price of ₹27,000 and I told him it needed to be ₹3,000 less as we had already paid for the day tour and he said that it never included that. I remember him saying that the ₹27,000 was for everything. He was adamant that he didn’t say that. He said something in Hindi and I said if he is going to insult me to at least do it in English!

I asked him where an ATM was so we could get some money. I told him I didn’t need anyone to take me but just to tell me. He didn’t listen though and sent his “heavy” with us to go get some money. As an aside: the ATM’s here are awful. You can get a max of ₹10,000 (or 40 notes) and then you have to go again.

We went back and paid our money and I told him he needed to be clearer next time. He laughed. We headed out to meet Sunny and his TukTuk again.

As we were driving, it was absolute crazy. There are no road rules here and no pedestrian rules either. You cross when you can, where you can. You drive where you can, when you can. It doesn’t matter if you are on the wrong side of the road or not – the only rule here it seems is that there are no rules!

Sunny stopped so we could get something to drink and then took us to the souvenir place. We went in and found some magnets. They were more expensive than I thought. Each magnet was ₹200 (we found the same later for ₹60). I’m pretty sure our “white faces” inflated the prices again. Grrrr.

We left here and then headed to Connaught Place so we could go to Starbucks. On our way, we were at traffic lights and some little children came up to us asking for money. Ken, in his best Indian accent, pumped out some Hindi and told them we didn’t have any money. It was sad to see, but one has to wonder if this is the reality for them or if it is an organised racket. Ken said that it happens a lot out here where they get together and just start begging when they don’t need to.

We carried on our way and went to Starbucks and sat in there for a while and then headed to Central Park for a walk around – not before being accosted several times more either.

We got to where we needed to cross and it was craziness. We were at a zebra crossing but they just weren’t stopping. I decided to just walk across and make them slow down for me – and they did just that.

We started walking around the park – it was OK. It’s just not super clean. I did see some chinchillas as we were walking and that was pretty cool.

They didn’t bother the magpies and crows and the magpies and crows didn’t bother them. We got accosted again and I carried on walking whilst Ken was the nice guy and chatted with them.

At this point, we both decided we were hungry and headed to Subway to get something to eat. We had to cross the busy road again and I just went for it. I didn’t even care. I did the same when I was in Amman and the same when I was in Cairo. I think the people watching my cross thought I was crazy.

I waited on the other side for Ken to cross so we could go get some dinner. We went in and I told them what I wanted (none of it looked appealing. All I can say is thank goodness for the food safety standards back at home). They kept asking if I wanted anything else with it and I told them no several times. I got really frustrated because I was tired and I was hungry and I hated having to repeat myself.

We messaged Sunny and asked about him being free but he said he was on his way back home and that his friend could come pick us up. We decided that we would just head back to the hotel. I said we should walk back and we did.

On our way, we came across a market and it was neon city here. Neon building signs. Bright lights of the motorbikes and TukTuks. They didn’t even care if you were walking either. They just carried on driving and beeping their horns to make sure you were out of the way. It’s definitely what I imagined Delhi to be.

We then headed back to the hotel and were walking along and constantly being asked if we wanted the food. I’ll be damned if I’m having street food here. I don’t want to get sick as I want to enjoy the trip.

We finally arrived back at the hotel and they had no spare twin rooms so we have to stay in the room with the unflushable toilet. Fingers crossed we don’t need to do any heavy business in there!

I was so glad when we finally landed. We went to our gate but had to wait a little bit as another plane was on our stand. As we were going to the stand, Ken said he could already feel the cold. I was loving it. I didn’t feel cold at all.

It was fairly easy getting across the border (once we were off the plane). My bag seemed to be the last one off too. I was beginning to think it was still in Delhi. I finally got it off the belt and went to the baggage desk to complain about the state of it.

We finally got out into the arrivals hall and I went to get a meal deal and I was in heaven drinking the cherry Tango. It was bliss.

We got to King’s Cross and just had to play the waiting game for the train. I was happy to be on it and back in Peterborough.

It was really nice to walk into my room and just relax.
